Companies with more than a few dozen staff
find that most of their people just want to see the information
that's in the marketing or contacts management database, rather than enter
or maintain records themselves. Also, allowing everyone direct access to the database is a not
a particularly good idea, because (a) it means buying lots of program
licences, and (b) the program itself will become slow with so many users,
and (c) there will be a big increase in traffic on the LAN or WAN, and
(d) they will all have to be shown how to use it.
Increasingly, the solution is to publish a selection
of reports on
the internet or the company's private intranet.
The reports are in static-file format and are uploaded automatically
every day, week or month, depending on how often the content changes.
The result is that anyone in the company can check the records at any
time, whether they are in the office, at home, at a client’s office
or anywhere in the world, without needing the database at all. All they need is the browser that comes free with their PC or laptop.
